Army committed to using locally made main weapon systems

Army Chief of Staff Gen George Toisutta confirmed that the army was committed to using domestically made main weapon systems (Alutsista).

"Whatever the risks, we must prioritize locally made hardware," Gen George Toisutta said after installing the Bukit Barisan regional military commander, Maj Gen M. Noer Muis.

Maj Gen Muis replaced Lt Gen Burhanuddin Amin who was promoted to become the Army`s Strategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) chief.

On the occasion the Army chief said he did not want to depend on foreign-made weapons in strengthening the army`s alutsista because they could any time become subject to an embargo.

"If an embargo is imposed on us, we cannot move," he said, adding that Indonesia had unpleasant experiences during past arms embargoes.

As a consequence of the embargoes, the TNI weapons systems which were necessary to maintain the sovereignty of the country became weak, he said, reiterating that the Army was determined to use locally-made "alutsista".

The Army Chief also explained that the army would strive to empower the domestic strategic defense industries such as PT Pindad and PT Pal.
